Another city, another missed gig. GY!BE (Godspeed You! Black Emperor).
I was recently visiting two of last few countries in Western Europe that I haven’t been to: Lithuania and Latvia.
I arrived in Riga Lativa and was told that GY!BE ( were playing…but they were sold out. Boo Hiss!
This has happened to me many times with bands. I remember on various previous trips just missing a gig by a day or so.
I missed Spyro Gyra in Boston, Jethro Tull in Melbourne, Australia, Steely Dan in Atlantic City and Joep Beving in Amsterdam.
I’m really intrigued by GY!BE and how they can create interesting soundscapes and textures using mainly bass, guitar, drums and violins/cellos. I seem to need layers of synth textures and keyboards to get the textures I like.
I think the post-rock genre (which GY!BE seem to be placed) seem to be very adept at this.
Note to self: I gotta pay attention to gig schedules when i travel.
